STORIES UNIT REFLECTION
This art for children unit was centered around the theme “stories.” I learned that stories are all around us, be it in photographs, videos, drawings, etc. My classmates and I produced various visual representations of the stories around us and about us. Our first assignment was to create a triptych that represented our lives from when we were babies, to adolescents, to adults. We were told that we could only use black and/or white and we were given mini pictures so that we could create mini collages. It was sort of a difficult task to find pictures that I thought represented my life. Thus, I decided to use the colors black and white to set the mood. My baby triptych is covered in white because I was innocent and pure. Adolescence became a little darker because I went through a rough time with family. The adult triptych was an equal mix of black and white because now I’m continuously finding myself through the storm. The next art project I created was called a “dirty picture.” My peers and I were told to go outside and get our fresh white papers as dirty as possible. Then we were told to come inside and get our pictures dirty with the classroom materials. I missed this class unfortunately, so my picture looks a bit different from my classmates. I wasn’t able to get my paper as “dirty.” My favorite part of this unit was going to the museum! I enjoyed seeing various pieces of art and reading about their history. Also, I enjoyed creating a story based on a random piece of art I found in the museum. I enjoy being able to use my creative juices!
Pink describes stories as “high concept and high touch…because it sharpens our understanding of one thing by showing it in the context of something else.” This saying reminds me of our countless talks in art class. My classmates and I believe that arts integration provides and outlet for children to express themselves when they can’t find the words. Furthermore, I enjoy the possibility of a student shining in this area who has a difficult time shining in other areas! In conclusion, many artists aim to tell stories through their work when they can’t find the words. Just like artists have stories, we all have stories! We are our stories! As a future educator, I plan on giving students an opportunity to tell me about themselves through their work!
